Squeezing more useable light out of a flash at shutterspeeds beyond the camera's maximum x-sync speed.
In this example each increase in shutter speed is matched by an equal reduction in aperture. (D3X) Unless stated the flash being used here is a Nikon SB800.
The same aperture is maintained. Flash model SB900, Pocket Wizard TT1 on Camera TT5 on flash. (D3x) Hypersync offset -1800
As the shutter speed increases, so does the flash benefit illustrated by the images becoming lighter. There are slight differences in the results from the same powered flashes with an inclination towards more even illumination throughout the shutterspeed range from the Quantum. The increase in flash ratio towards the faster shutterspeeds looks to be approximately 1 stop greater by the time the shutterspeed reaches 1/8000s.
